“DO YOU REALLY NEED THIS SEAT?”

THE CONUNDRUM

Lots of people sit in TFL’s priority seats without realising that they’re reserved for those who actually need them. We  have become desensitised to those bland, easy-to-ignore blue stickers.

I conducted an experiment where I used my white blind cane and stood next to the priority seats during rush hour for a month. 90% of the time, observers would look and then pretend not to notice me. And very rarely I would be offered a seat.

Sorry blue sticker, no one notices you anymore.

What we gonna do?

Let’s change behaviour and make people actually take notice of priority seats by putting thought-provoking copy on the seats, changing the seat covers and even putting text in the aisles.

TFL began trialling similar seat covers on the Jubilee Line after I made the suggestion.
